My daughter (although she has less significant issues) is in a resource room with the other "special kids" for most of the day. She only goes to the regular classroom for specials--gym, music, library and computer. I definately think it is important for some sort of interaction with typical children; both for her as well as the typical kids. She needs to see how she should be acting and how most kids her age are acting. Also, the sooner kids are exposed to those with special needs, the more accepting they will be in the future.

Dear Eric:

Many thanks. It's something we'd love to get to. A lot of people think Alex just hates milk. I hope that's true, and I hope he can tell me so in words someday.

Thanks for listening. Are you in the UK?

Dear Stacy:

It is awful to dread the breaks, but for what it's worth I understand a lot of parents of typically developing kids do, too. Remember that Staples commercial of a few years ago? A gleeful dad was back-to-school shopping with his two glum kids while "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year"? I loved that, and now I live it.

Thanks for listening.

Jeff and Jill... thanks for the laughter! That was a fun post. We "hate the breaks" in our house too! Summer break is coming and I am dreading it. 2 years ago we moved to a rural area (from the Chicago area) that does not have any summer programs for kids, beyond summer camp that teaches how to hunt and fish (ummm-vegetarian here!). I do not feel comfortable giving Paige a gun or a rod!

Can't wait for the next post from you two!!

Have you ever thought about the GFCF diet? Autistic kids tend to have over active Glutamate receptors, and giving milk (albeit poured down the sink!) is like adding petrol to a fire.

People like to stare at my son too, usually because he is sqealing--or just being himself. I must confess however that sometimes that I stare back at them just as hard. I just want them to know how it feels. He is just being himself and I am not embarrassed by his behaviors. The starers (I just made up that word) should be embarrassed by their ignorance and unaccepting behavior.
Keep up the great topics

I love your Specials. We live in the UK and have two children with high functioning autism, 8 and nearly 4. We decided to home educate them due to the way the education system works here and special needs are catered for, if that is the correct term. It is going quite well so far, though it is challenging.
best regards

I have a 20 year old who scares people in public. He recently answered the door of a home we have for sale and scared the potential buyers away. Call from our realator: "You'll have to move __ out of the house while it is for sale." I love this website.

I loved your discussion regarding stares. My Daniel makes lots of lou, unusual noises in public (his favorite is what we call "wah wahing" which sounds like an old Native American call with the hand hitting the mouth. People stare, and I usually don't make eye contact with them. I find that the older he gets (he'll be eight in December), the more uncomfortable it makes me.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Knowing that I'm not alone has always been the best therapy for me.

Keep sharing your insights and observations!
