Time off
Saturdays, school holidays, vacations… anytime’s a good time to go crazy with Alex at home. He loves structure; we love to sit around and catch up on reading, do a little housework, sip coffee. In short, no structure. This is fine for an occasional weekend. But a long school break (and we’re on Day 9, with a few days to go) brings its own challenges. Here’s a slice of what it’s like and how we cope. This podcast is available in our archives.

Jeff and Jill… thanks for the laughter! That was a fun post. We “hate the breaks” in our house too! Summer break is coming and I am dreading it. 2 years ago we moved to a rural area (from the Chicago area) that does not have any summer programs for kids, beyond summer camp that teaches how to hunt and fish (ummm-vegetarian here!). I do not feel comfortable giving Paige a gun or a rod!
Can’t wait for the next post from you two!!

Dear Stacy:
It is awful to dread the breaks, but for what it’s worth I understand a lot of parents of typically developing kids do, too. Remember that Staples commercial of a few years ago? A gleeful dad was back-to-school shopping with his two glum kids while “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”? I loved that, and now I live it.
Thanks for listening.
